ABSTRACT

This special session aims to include the fields of research on innovative approaches in measures to mitigate risks to human health, in particular the protection of people from harmful effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is widely used in industry and medicine, and can present a significant health hazard by causing microscopic damage to living tissue. The mitigation of radiation risks associated with environmental radioactivity has become increasingly urgent due to a convergence of recent events, regulatory shifts, and growing public health concerns worldwide. Equally important is the radiation protection and safety of radiation sources in medicine with regard to patients, workers, volunteers in biomedical research, and the public. It covers radiological procedures in diagnostic radiology (including dentistry), image guided interventional procedures, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. Innovative approaches to health measurement other than those involving the use and detection of ionizing radiation may be included in this special session.

TOPICS

Here are some examples of accepted topics:

  • Ionizing radiation in living and working environments;
  • Ionizing radiation in healthcare and medical practices;
  • Legislative and environmental provisions;
  • Radiation protection and sustainability;
  • Health protection and sustainability;
  • Measurements and monitoring of ionizing radiation.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Mariagabriella Pugliese, is Associate Professor at the University of Naples Federico II. Her research field is environmental radioactivity and radiation protection, both in the medical, environmental and space fields. She is the head of the Radioactivity Laboratory (LaRa, UNI EN ISO 9001:2015 certified laboratory) of the Department of Physics and Scientific Manager of the Federico II University's Radiation Protection. In the medical and environmental radiation protection field, MP has had responsibilities in projects of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), Italian Space Agency (ASI), National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL) and Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR).
MP published more than 190 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and was President of the Italian Society for Radiation Research from 2017 to 2021.

Giuseppe La Verde, is research has always focused on applied physics with a multidisciplinary approach. After almost a decade of research roles participating as a researcher in several research projects, he is currently a technical and research officer at the Department of Physics "E. Pancini" of the University of Naples Federico II.
His research interests focus on: i) environmental radioactivity, ii) indoor radon measurements and air quality; iii) radiometric characterization of environmental matrices, drinking water and building materials; iv) study and identification of NORM industry residues reusable in production processes (circular economy); v) study of exposure scenarios to radiation of natural origin in work and living environments; vi) study of the effects of ionizing radiation on biological systems and on drug administration.
GLV is the author of over 60 articles published in international journals and speaker at national and international conferences. In the editorial field, GLV collaborates with international magazines as a reviewer, guest editor and editorial member.
