SPECIAL SESSION #05

Innovative and Sustainable Remediation Technologies for Oil-Contaminated Soils in Arid Regions

ORGANIZED BY

Al-Mutairi Meshari Al-Mutairi

Meshari Al-Mutairi

Assistant professor

SPECIAL SESSION DESCRIPTION

Oil contamination in arid environments represents a major environmental and engineering challenge, particularly in regions affected by petroleum production and historic pollution events such as Kuwait’s oil lakes. Conventional remediation methods often face limitations related to efficiency, environmental impact, water consumption, and operational cost.

This Special Session focuses on innovative and sustainable remediation technologies for treating oil-contaminated soils and restoring impacted desert environments. The session aims to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss recent advances in soil remediation, hybrid treatment systems, environmentally friendly technologies, and field-scale applications.

TOPICS

Topics of interest include:

  • soil washing technologies;
  • ultrasonication-assisted remediation;
  • sustainable surfactants;
  • petroleum hydrocarbon removal;
  • environmental monitoring;
  • groundwater protection;
  • large-scale remediation projects in arid and semi-arid regions.

The session also welcomes industrial case studies, pilot projects, and interdisciplinary research related to environmental rehabilitation and sustainability.

Special attention will be given to emerging technologies that improve remediation efficiency while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Dr. Meshari Al-Mutairi, is an Assistant Professor at Abdullah Al Salem University (AASU), Kuwait, and an Environmental Consultant at Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). He holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom.
He is the inventor of patented soil remediation technologies for the treatment of oil-contaminated soils and oily wastewater, which have been successfully piloted in collaboration with KOC and KNPC. His research focuses on environmental remediation, sustainable technologies, environmental monitoring systems, emissions control, and innovative treatment solutions for contaminated soil and water.
Dr. Al-Mutairi has received international recognition for his innovations, including gold medals at international invention exhibitions in Geneva and Seoul. He is also the founder of Lothan International Environmental Consultancy and has extensive experience in environmental sustainability projects within the oil and gas sector.
